I headed out today not exactly sure what my plan was for the workout. Yesterday was a recovery day, but for some reason my resting HR was high this morning. I didn’t know what to expect out of my legs. So I set out for a long ride, with the possibility of doing some VO2’s. I headed out at an easy pace and just rode by feel.
I rode west for an hour which put me just past Caldwell on Simplot Blvd. I started my VO2 intervals there. The first one wasn’t too bad with an average wattage of 358. So I decided to do a set. The second one also wasn’t too bad, so figured if I could do two, I certainly could do four! I continued on and managed to squeeze out four solid VO2 intervals, with my best wattage on the last one. But that’s only because I knew it was the last one…even before I kicked it up at the end, that fourth VO2 really hurt and I knew I wouldn’t be able to do another one.
So with the hard work now behind me, I just enjoyed the rest of the ride. I stopped in Wilder for some much needed water. It was a hot day, but I like it hot! Then I headed north on Hwy 95. I did a couple low-cadence, tempo intervals, just to keep the ride interesting. I’m a “spinner” and always gravitate towards higher cadences. So I thought maybe my legs needed some practice at low RPMs. I did two 10-minute intervals, then just rode tempo the rest of the time. I had to stop again at the Purple Sage Golf Course for more water. But from then on it was 250-270 watts all the way home. It hurt, but it was that “good” kind of hurt. It also helped that I had a tailwind…I love going fast! So in the end, it turned out to be a good workout.
