Today I went with Heather to Milwaukee for the Brewer’s Hill Criterium. I’m glad I didn’t race the master’s race today as it started in a downpour! But as the day progressed the clouds departed and the mugginess returned just in time for Heather’s race. At least the course was almost totally dry by the time her race started. It was a good course with a decent sized hill in it. Heather was laying low for the first half which worried me. I can never tell if she’s just resting back there or if she is just feeling awful (later she told me she was feeling awful this time).
A break of three riders got away without any America’s Dairyland representation, and it looked like they were going to stay away. But late in the race there was some good effort to reduce the gap. Then one of the breakaway riders jumped and went solo. Then the pack caught the two remaining chasers and that’s when Heather made her move. She attacked and bridged up to the solo rider. It was getting down to a few laps to go and it looked good. They worked together until two laps to go when the other girl attacked Heather to solo in for win. But Heather held strong and got second. The first podium of Superweek for the team and they were all pleased with the result.
