This morning was the road race. The first lap was low-key with a small break getting away early. Everyone seemed to be fine with letting them go. There were a couple of pro riders in our field so everyone knew it would get hard eventually. The action started on the second lap and it didn’t stop until the finish. There were two small hills on each lap and by the second or third lap I ended up dropping off the front group. There were a few others who also couldn’t hang on so I ended up chasing with them. The first time it took us almost a complete lap to catch back on. This situation repeated itself all the way until the final lap where we eventually caught the front group with only 1K to go. I tried to sprint but didn’t have much and ended up 11th for the stage. It was a tough day and right after the race I felt wasted, but I was glad we caught the front group as that meant we’d get the same time. The race also took its toll on others as there were a few people who got dropped but never caught back on. So after the road race, I moved into 14th overall, down from 21st.
Heather’s race was fairly exciting as she attacked only a few miles into it and rode solo most of the way. She got caught and then attacked again only to get caught again with 1K to go. But she still had the energy to win the field sprint moving her into 1st in GC.
