We’re in Pocatello for the Gate City Grind, a great weekend stage race only three hours from Boise. We drove in earlier today and checked into our hotel then headed out to the prologue course. The prologue is new this year and it is not mandatory. A good thing for those that can’t make it they get the slowest time in their category plus 5 seconds. The course was a .7 mile hill then a flat section with a bunch of turns. I thought I got a good warm-up and rode it as hard as I could but you couldn’t tell from my time — I ended up third from last in my group! I’m not sure if I just didn’t go hard enough early in the hill or I’m still not recovered from Elkhorn last weekend. Or possibly, a little of both.
Heather had a bad time as well and her field was pretty small. Only three women in the Cat 1/2’s and four in the Cat 3’s. Heather’s time was actually so bad she would have gotten a better time if she had not ridden it since second place was 20 seconds faster than her. So instead of losing 20 seconds, she would have only lost 5 seconds! We got a laugh out of that later. Ted (pictured) decided to race with the Masters since he needed a ride home with one of the masters racers and they finished hours before the 1/2’s on Sunday. He rode a good time as did some of the other Intermountain Orthopaedics riders.
