Even though it was sunny as forecasted, it was still chilly when I headed out at 10:00 AM. I headed west from Reed Cycle and was helped along with a strong tailwind. My legs still felt tired but I was hoping they would feel better as I warmed up.
I kept it easy for the first hour then gradually picked it up. My legs never came around, but by the time I turned into the headwind there was no choice but to ride harder. Nothing like a strong headwind to keep you in Tempo/LT range. Even though my legs felt weak the entire ride the last couple hours I was putting out some decent wattage.
The smells of spring were in the air, especially up Old Freezeout. The yellow wildflowers were in bloom, creating nice yellow patches on the side of the hillside. But they also brought with them a strong sent and I’m sure, a lot of pollen. The temperature picked up as I headed down Hwy 16 into Eagle, where it finally felt neutral (not too hot, not too cold). On Beacon Light I bumped into a small group of fellow Lost River riders we chatted for a little bit then I broke off. I was wasted when I got home and have been pounding the liquids and calories. At 3 hours 42 minutes it ended up being my longest ride of the year. Usually by this time I would have done a few 4-5 hour rides. But it’s not a big deal as I’m shooting for good form later in the year than past seasons.
