Another stellar spring day and I decided to hit the Emmett–Horseshoe Bend Loop again. This time I added some structure to my ride doing a 20-minute LT on the way up Highway 16, then a 45-minute Tempo session through Black Canyon and finally pushed it up Old Horseshoe Bend Road climb. Even though I still felt a little residual fatigue in my legs from Thursday’s ride and a good sprint workout yesterday, I was able to crank out the power and nearly break my arbitrary 3-hour target for the ride. If I didn’t have to wind through the subdivision due to the construction on Floating Feather, I think I would have achieved it.
The weather was perfect with deep blue skies and a light northwest wind. By the last hour of the ride it was getting pretty warm, but I still wouldn’t call it hot. Coming down Highway 55 off of Old Horseshoe Bend Hill, it started to rain on me! It was very strange as there were only a few clouds hanging over Bogus Basin and nearby mountains, the rest of the sky was blue!? But the rain was short-lived; it only lasted halfway through that false flat by the new Avimor development going in. I also made sure I ate enough today and it seemed to help as I didn’t bonk like I did on Thursday. My legs were hurting by the end of the ride but I was still able to put out the power.
