Emmett Rd – Old Freezeout Loop

Click to view intervalsIt looked beautiful outside today with crystal blue skies and bright sunshine. But looks can be deceiving; it only got up to 45°F. Fortunately it stayed mostly sunny in the afternoon when I went out for a ride with Henry. He had already ridden for two hours by the time he met up with me at my house. He was in for a long ride, for sure!

Img_1237_2We headed out west on Beacon then Foothill, fighting a strong northwest wind. Then we went north on Middleton Rd then turned west on Galloway. That’s where I did a 20-minute LT interval. I told Henry what I was going to do and he just hung on for the ride. With the strong wind, he probably wasn’t working too hard, but I sure was! On the small rollers I had to go down into my 39×21! Nothing like going 15MPH during an interval to make you feel like a slug! But your wattage gives you the real gauge of how hard you’re working and I was bouncing around between 290–300.

I continued the interval north on Emmett Rd and finished it just a a few minutes before the top of Little Freezeout. I ramped it up over the last five minutes and it felt good…in a sadistic sort of way. When I completed my interval, we spun easy for the rest of the climb and I whipped out my camera to take some pics. Henry had a little off-road adventure but easily hopped back onto the pavement!

Img_1240_2We headed down the other side and turned onto South Slope Rd. We took it easy enjoyed the help from the tailwind. I rode up Old Freezeout standing the entire way, mainly to give my butt a break. We re-grouped at the top then headed down Hwy 16. I pushed it on the downhills and flats, then eased up on the uphills so Henry could hang on. He had been riding for 5 hours at this point and was feeling a little weak. We took it easy on Beacon Light and to my house. I gave Henry some food so he could make the ten or so miles back to his home. My ride was just under three hours but his ended up close to six! Wow!
