Since it’s President’s Day I knew things would be quiet around work, so I had already decided to work from home. It worked out well since the weather was nice enough that I was able to go out for an outdoor ride over lunch. I only went out for an hour but it felt so good. The ACHD had done a good job of picking up most of the sand on the main roads in Eagle from all the snow we received this winter. It was great to be moving through space and getting that sense of speed, versus being stationary indoors.
After using rollers and a trainer for over two months (with the exception of the rides I did in St George) it actually felt strange to ride on the road. It was great how there was no slip whatsoever when I stood up and accelerated. Even with the Continental Hometrainer tires for indoor training, there’s nothing like the direct-drive feel you get on the road. When you stomp on those pedals, you can feel the direct power transfer to forward speed! With rollers or a trainer, there’s always some slippage.
Because I wasn’t sure when I’d be able to go out again, I did a mini sprint workout. After each sprint I’d recover a little bit but then bring my power back up to the low- to mid-tempo range. It felt so good to be riding outside and I was surprised that my sprint wattage wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It’s hard to do true sprint workouts indoors so I haven’t done one in a while. On the way back, I did a few random pushes into LT/VO2 territory, but didn’t really count them as intervals…so no intervals to chart today.
