So I drove back out, east of Boise (lots of driving today!), and got off at the Mayfield/Orchard exit. The Sinclair Boise Stage Stop is at this exit, which was nice since they have parking and I needed to fill up. Ironically, Heather and I once rolled into this station on fumes when we barely ran out of gas returning home from a trip.
Conditions were similar to this morning; about 49°F with a slight wind. I guessed where I thought the start would be and headed out on the correct course for the Jason Broome Time Trial. I eased into a tempo pace since I didn’t do another warm-up. The course starts with a sweeping left-hand turn, pointing you south while you start heading downhill. The hill is about half a kilometer with a constant grade of around 4%. Once you get to the bottom of the hill, there are a couple of very slight rollers, smaller than the ones on Kuna-Mora Rd (last year’s course).
At mile 2.5 it becomes pancake-flat until the turnaround. There is a sweeping right-hand turn at about mile 3.5. The turnaround should be at mile 5, just before the railroad tracks. I’m not sure where they’ll put the finish, but it will probably be about a half mile from the top of the hill to the finish. Today it was faster on the way out, due to the wind, but wind direction may be different on Sunday. One thing for sure, out there all the way by Mt Home, there’s almost a guarantee there’ll be wind!
After that tempo/LT effort, I spun out for a little bit then practiced the beginning and end of the course at LT pace. It felt good and I got a good idea of how much to give it on the hill. I’m actually glad the course is different, it’s almost the perfect TT course for me. The flatter the better, and the slight hill towards the finish will help you get the wattage up to make sure you really spent everything you had on the course. The wind will be the biggest factor.
