So I was all excited to start my training plan. The last three weeks I’ve been riding sporadically and indulging myself with foods that I normally don’t eat. I even had a Whopper a few days ago and just yesterday I had a couple hot dogs while I was volunteering at the Boise Bonsai event. I don’t think I’ve had a hot dog in five years! Anyway, today I am back on the wagon, as far as diet is concerned, and went for my first “official” ride of my 2007 training plan.
I was all set to do a 2-hour endurance ride with a bunch of 80% sprints interspersed throughout. I was going to go earlier in the day, but it was still chilly in the morning so I waited until after lunch. By the time I headed out, clouds had invaded the earlier clear-blue skies. It looked like there was rain over by Bogus, but it looked like just localized mountain rain.
So I headed out west…as usual. By the time I got to Can Ada Rd, the dark clouds were spreading west and I decided to head back. I continued doing sprints now and then and kept the pace at an endurance level. When I got within 2 miles of my house I could start to feel random raindrops. So I started pushing the pace. By the time I was a block away it was officially raining but the roads weren’t sopped yet.
I barely made it home with my bike still fairly dry. Not that I’m a bike snob, but that was the main reason I wanted to beat the rain; I didn’t feel like washing my bike again. Doing a complete cleaning of my road bike only takes 45 minutes, but since I just did it days ago, I wasn’t in the mood to do it again!
So I got on my rollers and finished my workout with a much-needed cool-down. From rushing home, the last five minutes out on the road pushed me above threshold and I got my HR pretty high. I was a little disappointed my first ride didn’t go as planned but I did learn a lesson: Don’t postpone a ride for later when the weather is good now!
