Today I woke up feeling a little worse than yesterday, but with only a short time trial and the criterium this afternoon, I was hoping the low-volume day would allow me to recover a little bit. We went out to the TT course and Heather was the first to go off. She got a good warm-up in and then headed to the start area for her ride. When she got back she said she felt pretty good but she probably lost a little time on the GC leader.
I did a short warm-up and my legs were tired from yesterday. So I knew before I started I wouldn’t have a great TT. I started my TT easy and tried to slowly get up to my threshold power. I had switched saddles on our time trial bike a few weeks ago and I made the mistake of not riding it on the road to make sure the position was fine. So after settling into my TT position, I could feel myself sliding down. It also felt like the saddle was too high. So during my entire ride I was pushing myself back up on the saddle. That probably didn’t cost me much time but it was particularly annoying. Despite that, I rode a fairly steady pace, picking up my effort on the hills and then for the final kilometer. I came through the line spent but I probably could have gone harder a little earlier. But between how I was feeling and the fact that this race was a “C” priority race, I didn’t have the motivation to give it anymore.
Later, when we checked the results and I ended up around 39th, almost 3 minutes off the winner, but the good news was Heather was 2nd.
