We left for St. George, UT after the race, and the next day we traveled to Boise. On the way through Ogden, we had an experience that we hope never to repeat. We ran out of gas. Luckily we were able to coast off the freeway and off the off-ramp. Unfortunately, there was no gas station close and a light turned red. So, we came to a complete stop at the intersection. I had to push the car off to the shoulder.
Then this amazing thing happened. A woman named Amy pulled up and asked if we needed help. She was from Kaysville and was headed to pick up her daughter (one-year-old tomorrow) from her aunt’s house. Amy said that whenever she has car problems, no one will stop and help her, so she has to walk. She wanted to do a good deed for someone else in trouble. She drove me to the nearest gas station, so I could get gas. We didn’t have a gas can in the car, so I was planning on purchasing one at the station. As luck would have it, they were sold out of them. I decided to buy a gallon of water and pour it out and use the container for the gas. By this time, the workers at the station figured out that I had run out of gas. I went to purchase the water, and the woman wouldn’t charge me for it, because I was just going to dump the water out. I got the gallon of gas and Amy drove me back to the car. Uhl cut the bottom off a water bottle and used it to get the gas into the car; he used a pen to hold the flap open. The car started and Amy followed us to the nearest gas station. I wanted to give her money or at least thank her better, but she drove off. That was an act of a true Samaritan. It is now time to set new goals and refocus. I am still trying to get over my sinus infection; I am on my third course of antibiotics. There is still lots of racing to be done this year.
