Heather’s race didn’t go so well yesterday so we made the decision that she wouldn’t start today’s races. She needs to get healthy and racing was not going to help that process. This morning was the time trial. I thought I’d be in good shape since I didn’t kill myself yesterday and typically have a good recovery. I did a good warmup on the TT bike on my rollers. Even though I didn’t have my PowerTap, I felt pretty good during the warmup pushes. One funny thing is that I briefly started coughing right after my warmup as I did after the Bogus Prologue on Tuesday night. Fortunately, it didn’t continue, but I think it was a remnant of that awful ride.
This was the first time I rode Heather’s Javelin and it definitely felt weird. I was so used to time trialing on my regular road bike with clip-on bars that I think I got spoiled. With that setup, I felt really comfortable, like I could go all day in that position. The TT bike has its handlebars so much lower, so you are more aero on it, but the downside is that it’s not as comfortable. I’m not sure if it was just the comfort but I didn’t feel like I could generate a lot of power on it.
I started out pretty tame and tried to ease into it. With the out portion of the TT course being slightly uphill, it’s kind of hard to gauge your effort. I just basically rode a smooth and steady TT, and pushed the downhill return leg, as much as I could. Once they posted the results, I found out that I rode a 22:02 for the 10-mile course, which was 26th. I was pretty happy with that result.
